A minute of silence was observed on board of the Italian destroyer ‘Luigi Durand de la Penne’ in memory of the victims of the bridge collapse in Genoa. The destroyer arrived in the port of Dakar, the second stop in the 2018 training campaign for officers-in-training of the 2nd class of the Livorno Naval Academy, on 18 August, 2018.
Several events were held on board the vessel of the Italian Navy which were attended by the Italian Ambassador in Dakar, Francesco Paolo Venier, the Senegalese Navy and Air Force Chiefs of Staff, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of international organisations. In particular, the late UN Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Kofi Annan, was commemorated at the flag lowering ceremony presided over by Captain Armando Paolo Simi, commander of the destroyer.
The Durand de la Penne destroyer will leave Dakar tomorrow, and head to Lagos (Nigeria), Accra-Tema (Ghana), and Casablanca (Morocco).
The 123 officers-in-training on board are completing their professional education programme, which began last year on the Amerigo Vespucci training ship, with this strictly operational experience. The campaign includes training and presence and surveillance activities but also naval diplomacy actions through events that allow the crew and the officers-in-training to acquire a better understanding of the actual situation in the countries they visit, with a view to facilitating contacts with members of the local armed forces.
