Ethiopia, the Foreign Ministry allocates 500,000 euros for assistance to displaced persons

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in close coordination with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, has allocated a 500,000-euro financial contribution to tackle the humanitarian crisis in the regions of Gedeo and West Guji, in Ethiopia. The contribution will mainly be used to provide emergency shelters as well as relief material and support to mobile clinics.

“In close coordination with the Government authorities in Ethiopia and OCHA, IOM will use the Italian contribution to scale up the response for internally displaced people in Gedeo and West Guji and to alleviate the critical situation in the state with special attention to the most vulnerable,” said Maureen Achieng, IOM Ethiopia Chief of Mission.

According to IOM, since April 2018 some 970,000 people have been displaced from their homes in the area. Thanks to this contribution, which is expected to benefit nearly 100,000 people, Italy confirms its support for the Ethiopian government’s action in response to the humanitarian emergency.
