The Italian Cultural Institute in Hamburg and the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, in collaboration with the Hanser and Zsolnay publishing houses, are publishing 12 Incontri con il romanzo italiano di oggi/ 12 Begegnungenmit Italiens Prosa der Gegenwart, a collection of twelve extracts from twelve novels nominated for the renowned Strega Prize 2020.
The Strega Prize is a literary prize that is awarded each year to a recently published Italian book. The publication period must be between 1 March of the previous year and 28 February of the current year.
Candidate books are read and voted by a jury composed of 400 Amici della Domenica (400 Sunday Friends), to which are added 200 votes cast by Italian and foreign scholars, translators and intellectuals selected by twenty Italian Cultural Institutes abroad, forty votes cast by strong readers selected by twenty independent bookstores distributed throughout Italy and twenty collective votes cast by schools, universities and reading groups, for a total of 660 eligible readers.
The first vote, which will select the five finalists, will be held on Tuesday 9 June at the Chamber of Commerce of Rome in the Hall of Hadrian’s Temple, due to the transformation of the Bellonci Foundation headquarters into a museum house. As per tradition, the election of the winner will take place on Thursday, July 2 at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia and live on Rai 3.
