Six hundred donations, totalling over 500,000 dollars. These are the numbers of the #Italystaystrong fundraising campaign launched by the Embassy of Italy in Washington and the Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation (ISSNAF) to support Italy in the fight against Covid-19.
The fundraiser, which was supported by an intense action of promotion of the diplomatic-consular network in the USA, was attended by students, researchers, community members and representatives of the Italian American communities, companies and prominent representatives of Silicon Valley. The funds will be divided equally between the Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute in Rome, the Sacco Hospital in Milan and the Cotugno Hospital in Naples, which played a central role both in managing the emergency and in research during the pandemic in Italy. The funds will then be allocated to specific projects dedicated to research on infectious diseases with a focus on Covid-19, as part of the strong and important bilateral collaboration in the scientific field.
“American support has arrived on time, as many other times in the history of our country – Ambassador Armando Varricchio affirmed – Even when the number of people affected by Covid continued to increase in the United States, America lent a helping hand to Italy. We will not forget this”. “I am sure I interpret the thinking of all of us at ISSNAF in saying that our commitment to this campaign has made us feel even more how strong our ties with Italy are, as well as those between the scientific communities on both sides of the Atlantic. We are delighted to have been of help,” Professor Cinzia Zuffada, President of ISSNAF, commented.
