The Italian Institute of Culture in Dakar has organized a series of events in collaboration with Bayaal 221, to introduce the music and popular theater of the Campania region and southern Italy, featuring the work of the artist Luca Rossi, considered one of the finest Italian interpreters of this sector and one of the most representative exponents of tamoras and frame drums. The program will also include meetings and exchanges with popular Senegalese culture.
The program will open on November 16 at 6 p.m. In the garden of the Italian Institute of Culture in Dakar, with a seminar titled: “Du tarantisme au ndeup”, the miraculous power of popular apotropaic rituals through music, song and dance. On Wednesday November 17 a workshop on the tamora, frame drums and the rhythms of southern Italy will be held at the Blaise Senghor Regional Cultural Center in Dakar. This will be an educational event with the participation of 10 Senegalese professional percussionists.
On Saturday, November 20 at 8 p.m., Luca Rossi will perform at the Théâtre National Daniel Sorano in “The love of a tamora and a djembe”. The performance, created and produced by Bayaal 221, is a combination of theater, music and folklore: the meeting of cultures through a love story between two instruments, one of ancient Italian tradition and the other sub-Saharan; a voyage in history, touching on the rituals, the rhythms between tammurriata and sabar, taranta and goumba, with singers, saltigue and griot. Onstage with Rossi (frame drums and voice), will be Giovanni Parrillo (piano, harmonica, winds and drums) and, among the others, Cheikh Lo, Thierno Koite (Baobab Orchestra), Flambeau Ndiaye Rose, Leauz Diwane G, the Caada Dialaw, Daba, Kalsoum and Corinna Fiora Companies.
