A meeting on the 21 women of the Constituent Assembly which led to the Italian Constitution will take place at the Italian Cultural Institute in Hamburg on Thursday, 20 January 2022 (7:00 p.m.). The protagonist will be journalist Eliana Di Caro, author of the book“ Le madri della Costituzione” [The mothers of the Constitution] (Il Sole 24 ore, 2021).

On 2 June 1946, the Italian people chose the Republic, and on 25 June the Constituent Assembly took office, made up of 556 members, 21 of whom were women: 9 Communists, 9 Christian Democrats, 2 Socialists, 1 from the Front of the Ordinary Man. Twenty-one women became part of the group of the so-called “founding fathers” of the Italian Constitution. The book “Le madri della Costituzione” tells the experienced and convergent lives of 21 women who wanted to reach freedom and dignity of all human beings through gender equality.

Eliana Di Caro was born in Matera and works for the supplement dedicated to culture “Domenica” of Il Sole 24 Ore. She is the author of “Donne della Repubblica” [Women of the Republic] (il Mulino, 2016), “Donne nel 68” [Women in 1968] (il Mulino, 2018), “Donne al futuro” [Women in the future] (il Mulino, 2021), among others.
