The Italian Embassy in Algiers presents a new book entitled “Enrico Mattei e l’Algeria. Un amico indimenticabile (1962-2022)”, (“Enrico Mattei and Algeria: An Unforgettable Friend (1962-2022)”, with an introduction by Ambassador Giovanni Pugliese. The event takes place only a few days before the opening of the 25th edition of the Algiers International Book Fair, at which Italy will be guest of honor.
The publication, also thanks to the support of Eni’s Historic Archive, is part of the initiatives aimed at commemorating the 60th anniversary of Algeria’s independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations with Italy.
The book, published in three languages (Italian, French and Arabic) and printed in Algeria for the Italian Embassy by the Barzakh Publishing House, is dedicated to the figure of Enrico Mattei and to the inauguration of the gardens in Algiers named after him during President Sergio Mattarella’s State visit to Algeria last November. The publication traces the deep-set historic and friendship ties between Mattei, Algeria and Italy. The book publishes more than sixty documents, some of which unpublished up to now, including archival records, writings, articles, and photos, in addition to important institutional speeches, such as the one by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luigi Di Maio.
Through the cooperation with the Farnesina’s Historic Diplomatic Archive, it was possible to publish a section with important Italian historical diplomatic documents of 1962, including the original declaration by the Italian Government recognizing the independence of Algeria of 3 July 1962.
