To mark the 8th of March, International Women’s Day, the Italian Embassy in Washington DC dedicated the presentation of the “East Coast” episode of the “One of Us” documentary series to Ukraine, at the attendance of the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. The Embassy’s guests of honor included the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, and Doctor Anthony Fauci, Chief Medical Advisor to President Biden and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The “One of Us – East Coast” documentary – viewable online, free of charge, on YouTube (https://youtu.be/o0m3riOXx4U ) – is directed by Chiara Tilesi and co-produced by the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington DC. It relates the story of five Italian women whose success in the US are an inspiration for new generations: Cecilia Alemani, art director, La Biennale di Venezia; Natalia Bergamaschi, strategic partner lead, Google; Cristina Cassetti, Branch Chief, Virology Branch Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health (NIH); Isabella Rossellini, actress, writer, philanthropist; Mariangela Zappia, Italian Ambassador to the United States.

The documentary narrates the story and experience of Italian-born women in the East and West Coasts of the United States who, through their commitment and determination, succeeded to emerge also in sectors not specifically and traditionally connected to the world of women, such as the cinema, STEM disciplines, publishing, finance, the arts, philanthropy, diplomacy and science.

“One of Us” is divided into two episodes, “East Coast” and “West Coast”, in order to best describe the presence of these key Italian players on both coasts of the US.  “One of Us- West Coast” will instead premiere on 10 March at the Brainwash Art Museum in Beverly Hills, screened in partnership with the Italian Consulate General and the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles.
