Brussels: the woods, wood and violin-making

Bruxelles il bosco il legno e la liuteria

The Italian Cultural Institute in Brussels has organised, as part of the event “Ai margini del bosco” (On the edge of the woods), a meeting – scheduled for 28 April – with luthier Bruno Stefanini, who has been crafting musical instruments since 1989, after graduating as Master Luthier at the Scuola di Liuteria Artistica in Bologna. Wood is a fundamental resource for music: in particular, fir wood (firs in Val di Fiemme are particularly precious) is used to make soundboards, the basic element of all string instruments. The soundboard is a wooden membrane whose function is to convert the vibrations produced by the string and conveyed from the bridge into sound waves, thus allowing our ears to perceive the sound.

During the event, organised by the Cultural Institute, the Master Luthier will offer a practical demonstration and reveal some secrets of the crafting of stringed instruments, and will tells us more about their design, construction and restoration. Fabio Ognibeni of Ciresa – a leading company in the supply of soundboards across Europe and the world – will be attending the event too. The musical background of the event will be performed by Italo-Belgian violinist Loris Douvez, who shall play some tunes in order for the public to fully appreciate this instrument’s technical potential.
