The Italian Cultural Institute in Addis Ababa, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy and other organisations including the Ethiopian Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage (ARCCH) and Addis Ababa University, have organised a conference on “Human Evolution and Archaeology. New research by Sapienza Università di Roma in Ethiopia”.

This Italian-Ethiopian conference was organised under the agreement between the Institute and Sapienza Università di Roma. The university has been working since 2016 on a research project in Ethiopia, focusing on the origins of Homo sapiens and modern human behaviour. The conference will include, in particular, a presentation of the research conducted in Ethiopia by the Italian archaeological mission in Gotera (southern Ethiopia). Along with the main local authorities working on research into and the conversation of the archaeological heritage in Ethiopia, participants will discuss the results obtained thus far and the outlook for the future.

Speakers include Takele Mired, Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies; Worku Derara Mengenassa, Director of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Management, Addis Ababa University;  Enza Elena Spinapolice, Sapienza Università di Roma; and Amesias Alemu, Addis Ababa University.
