On the occasion of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, the Italian Embassy in Riga has organised an articulated programme with more than 15 events, from 16 to 20 October 2023, revolving around the unsustainable/sustainable dichotomy, entitled “in/sostenibile”.

At the centre of the debate is the need for a transition between unsustainable and sustainable lifestyles and how the Italian language can not only describe but accompany this epochal change. “The programme of the Week of the Italian Language in Latvia,” said Ambassador Alessandro Monti, “is an invitation to deepen our understanding of the challenges of the climate crisis, accepting its complexity.” After all, only two letters separate the two concepts: “this is a simple step,” he added, “as many small changes we can make in our daily lives can be. But, at the same time, it is an imposing challenge in which we are all involved, to continue to guarantee social justice and development to our societies.”

The comprehensive programme of the Week includes exhibitions, lectures, concerts, and numerous initiatives for boys and girls. The inauguration of the Centre for Cooperation with Italy at the Riga Technical University is planned, which among other things will promote, with the support of the Embassy, Italian language courses for the Latvian public and in particular for young people.

The Week will end with the inauguration of “Fashion Panorama – The Italian New Wave”, an exhibition promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and curated by Vogue Italia to present a new generation of Italian designers, whose creative philosophy also confronts the theme of sustainability. The exhibition is organised by the Italian Embassy in Riga and Italian Trade Agency, in cooperation with Riga Fashion Week. It will be on display at the Ola Foundation in Riga from 21 October to 20 November 2023.
