The Italian Ambassador in Baghdad, Maurizio Greganti, presided over the inauguration ceremony of the Nineveh Archaeological Park, the first Archaeological Park in Federal Iraq. The ceremony was attended by Adnan Ibrahim, Presidential Advisor, Najim al-Jubouri, Governor of Nineveh, Abdelsitar Habo, Mayor of Mosul, and Nicolò Marchetti of the University of Bologna, Director of the Iraqi-Italian Archaeological Expedition, to which the Park is owed.
Ambassador Greganti expressed his “profound admiration for the tenacious commitment and tireless work that led to this extraordinary achievement, which takes on an even deeper meaning in Iraq, a land with thousands of years’ worth of cultural heritage. Thanks to the work of the Iraqi-Italian Archaeological Expedition, this marks a fundamental step in the reconstruction and rebirth of the country after the site was devastated during the advance of Daesh terrorists.”
Mr. Greganti emphasised his satisfaction with the level of synergy demonstrated by the Italian-Iraqi team led by Professor Marchetti and Heireddin Nasser, who have cleared the site of the rubble left by the terrorists, restored the known monuments, and realised the discovery of new artefacts of extraordinary importance. Thanks to their exceptional professionalism, it is now once again possible to admire unique testimonies of the past, which will contribute significantly to the growth and development of the entire region. This cooperation is also a tangible sign of Italy’s ongoing commitment to the preservation of Iraq’s archaeological heritage.
