The Italian Cultural Institute of Bratislava, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy, has organised two concerts dedicated to Italian medieval music to open the Week of the Italian Language in the World in Slovakia. Both concerts were performed by the Murmur Mori ensemble, which gave a first concert in the Franciscan Church in Bratislava and a second in St. Emmeran’s Cathedral in Nitra.
The event brought the local public closer to the richness and creativity of ancient Italian music, similar to the Italian language in its constant evolution to keep up with the times, while at the same time remaining deeply tied to its roots.
Murmur Mori was born in 2015 in Bologna from the meeting of Mirko Volpe and Silvia Kuro, experts in medieval music and literature. Their research on traditional Italian music led them to explore the richness of the different regional dialects and languages, still widely used in today’s Italy, embarking on a journey back to its roots in the 12th and 13th centuries. The ensemble has never used electricity to amplify its music; a choice that stems from the desire to offer a more authentic listening experience. The musical instruments played are reproductions based on representations from the 13th-14th centuries.
