The Italian Cultural Institute of London is pleased to present artist Marinella Senatore‘s work “We Rise by Lifting Others”, a light sculpture inspired by Southern Italy’s tradition of illuminated decorations, which will be on display at London’s Southbank Centre until 7 January.

Marinella Senatore trained as a director of photography at the National Film School in Rome. She designs large-scale light sculptures for public places, museums and festivals worldwide.

The “We Rise by Lifting Others” project was handcrafted in Apulia. The artist bases her work on social connections and the power of art to initiate a process of individual and collective emancipation. Of working with light, the artist states that “it can be a tool for narration and poetic creation, as well as for resistance and cohesion”. Her project aims to draw connections between individuals, both physically and at a distance.

The sculpture is part of the larger exhibition, “Winter Light”, an exhibition of illuminated outdoor artworks created by ten contemporary artists with the aim of using colour and light in a playful way while exploring topics such as individual and collective identity, the environment and technology.
