The Red Bench at the Italian Embassy in Kabul – now operating from Doha – was inaugurated by the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, in the presence of Ambassador Sabrina Ugolini and the Embassy staff.

The initiative is part of the project – strongly desired by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Antonio Tajani – to place a red bench in all Italian diplomatic Missions abroad, as a symbol of the empty place left in society when a woman falls victim to gendercide, but also as a visible testimony of the fight against gender discrimination.

As Minister Tajani himself recalled recently “we must sit on those benches and support women against violence and all forms of discrimination, starting with Afghanistan.”’

A red bench that is particularly relevant in the Afghan context, where women and girls are daily victims of severe violations of their rights and personal freedoms.
