In collaboration with the territorially competent Italian authorities (Prefectures, Police Headquarters, Municipalities, Local Health Units, Social Services), the Consular Representation provides for the definitive repatriation of Italian citizens residing abroad who are in severe conditions of poverty, and of Italian neglected minors.
Repatriation is subject to check of the relatives’ willingness to take on – in Italy – the responsibilities connected with the maintenance and assistance of the repatriated person. In the absence of such willingness, repatriation is coordinated with the Social Services of the Municipality of last residence or origin in Italy, or through the use of regional funds.
The repatriation of neglected minors is carried out at the expense of the Treasury, in agreement with the competent Juvenile Court and the Social Services of the Municipality of residence.
Definitive return to Italy – Customs facilitations
Italian citizens who have been resident abroad for at least 12 months and transfer their residence to Italy are entitled to customs facilities and – depending on the regional, provincial or municipal regulations – to possible financial contributions.
Customs exemptions apply to household goods owned and used by the applicant and intended for personal use, as well as to the car owned for at least 6 months.
The return of household goods shall take place within 12 months from the date declared as the last day of residence abroad.
