Repatriation for health reasons

Modulo di richiesta informazioni

(Information request form)

(Reference Office: D.G.IT. – Protection Unit)

In the case of fellow citizens requiring hospitalisation in Italy, the diplomatic-consular Mission urges family members to identify a medical facility in which the fellow citizens shall be admitted once arrived in Italy. In the event of difficulty, the Mission may ask the Prefecture to identify the medical facility. In view of ensuring proper care for patients, the Consular Office may assist family members in obtaining the medical records to be sent to the facility in Italy.

A prerequisite for medical repatriation is that the healthcare facility where fellow citizens are hospitalized issues a certificate confirming that they are in a position to face the journey and the conditions under which such transport should be carried out (the so-called “fit to fly” or “certificate of air transportability of the patient”). The Mission can assist family members in requesting the issuance of this certificate from local healthcare facilities.

Once this documentation and the patient’s medical records have been obtained – translated into Italian if not already written in a common language – the Mission can facilitate contacts between family members and the airline identified for transport. If a scheduled flight is not available, the Consular Office may be asked for the contact details of private companies operating locally that provide air ambulance services. Contacts will be established between the fellow citizens (or their family if the former are incapacitated) and the company itself.

You can also check with your Region and local authorities in Italy whether they have specialized structures to carry out or facilitate the medical repatriation of their residents from abroad.
