Diplomatic-consular Missions provide assistance in cases of repatriation of the remains of fellow citizens who died abroad or nationals of other countries who require burial in Italy.
If the death occurred in a country that is not a signatory to the 1937 Berlin Convention, before issuing the mortuary passport, the diplomatic Missions shall request authorization from the Municipality of destination for the entry of the body or ashes.
In order to obtain the mortuary passport, the applicant shall go, by prior appointment, to the Consular Office and exhibit the following documentation:
- death certificate;
- certificate from the competent local health Authority stating that specific hygienic requirements have been met;
- certificate attesting that death occurred in an area free of infectious and endemic diseases.
The States that have ratified the Berlin Convention on the Transportation of Corpses are: Austria, Belgium, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Turkey.
