Minister Plenipotentiary Nicola VEROLA
He was born in Brindisi on 12 September 1968.
He graduated in Political Science from the University of Rome on 31 March 1993.
Following competitive examination, he entered the diplomatic career (commercial specialisation) on 30 March 1994.
He attended the professional training course at the Diplomatic Institute from 30 March 1994 to 30 January 1995.
He started to work at the DG for Economic Affairs, Office III, on 31 January 1995 as Secretary of Legation.
He started to serve at the DG for Economic Affairs, Office I, on 26 July 1995.
He was at the École Nationale d’Administration (E.N.A.) in Paris from 6 September 1996 to 9 March 1998.
He started to work at the Secretariat of the DG for Economic Affairs on 16 March 1998.
He was appointed First Secretary of Legation on 30 September 1998.
He served as First Commercial Secretary in Canberra as of 28 June 1999. Secretary of Legation (by Legislative Decree No. 85 of 24 March 2000).
He served as First Commercial Secretary at the Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels as of 1 August 2002. Counsellor of Legation (2 July 2004). He was confirmed in the same post as Commercial Counsellor on 9 November 2004.
He served at the Cabinet of the Honourable Minister, Office for Relations with Parliament, as of 10 July 2006.
From December 2006 to June 2007 he attended the professional refresher course for Counsellors of Legation at the Diplomatic Institute, as provided for by Art. 17, paragraph 7, of Legislative Decree No. 85 of 24 March 2000.
He was appointed Counsellor of Embassy on 2 July 2009.
He was appointed First Counsellor to Washington on 13 September 2010.
He was posted to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, as Head of the Technical Secretariat of the Under-Secretary of State for European Affairs, on 6 May 2014.
Following a change of Government, he was confirmed in that post with the same assignment on 13 December 2016.
He was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary on 2 January 2017.
While reporting directly to the Director General for the European Union as of 1 June 2018, on 25 March 2019 he also took on the vicarious tasks and functions of the Deputy Director General/Central Director for European Countries.
In January 2020 he took on the full tasks and functions of Deputy Director General/Central Director for European Countries.
Since April 2023 he has been serving as Director General for Europe and International Trade Policy.
He was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic in 2016.
