Italy-Albania: support for Tirana on its road to Europe, says Dassù

Italy’s support for Albania and especially for its European prospects was reiterated by Secretary of State Marta Dassùin her talks with Albanian leaders in Tirana. In her recent meeting with the Premier, Sali Berisha, the Secretary of State also discussed the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative, which Berisha views as “a project of fundamental importance for the Western Balkans”.


Dassù reiterated that Italy “is in the front line” in Europe in supporting the process of European expansion to include Albania. This issue was also the focus of her talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Edmond Haxhinasto, the Minister for European integration, Majlinda Bregu, and the Mayor of Tirana, Lulzim Basha. As the Secretary of State explained, “Italy believes that the western Balkans are an integral part of the European Union”.


During her visit to Tirana, Secretary of State Dassù also met the leader of the opposition and secretary of the Socialist Party, Edi Rama.
