Yemen: Coast Guard officer training

Working in conjunction with the MFA, the Italian Coast Guard launched a project last week for the training of coast guard officers in Yemen.

The visit allowed for the selection of the 15 participants in training courses to be held in Italy from May to November at centres in Genoa, Pomezia and Messina, with a variety of subject matters (international law, search and rescue (SAR), VTS systems, etc.)

During their stay in Yemen, the Italian representatives, in addition to ensuring the selection procedure, held a series of meetings with local counterparts and with the EU delegation, for the purpose of both presenting the project and ascertaining the status of eventual analogous partner activities.

Bilateral collaboration resumes

This initiative by Italy assumes additional importance being the first by a member of the “Supporting Nations” (SN) to resume bilateral collaboration in this sector since the mid-2011 suspension due to the political and security crisis in Yemen. Other members include the U.S., France, Japan, Denmark and the UK.
