The Italian-Polish inter-governmental summit which took place at Villa Madama in Rome was chaired by Prime Minister Mario Monti and Prime Minister Donald Tusk and attended by a delegation of ministers from both countries.
Italy and Poland have sound bilateral relations and a well-established economic-commercial relationship in terms of both trade and investment. Over 800 Italian enterprises operate in Poland, where the most significant opportunities offered by the market are in the numerous infrastructure projects, not least in the context of the European Union financial programming for 2014-2010.
The Italian Ambassador had promoted a meeting between Italian entrepreneurs and the Polish authorities in late February 2012, as part of the run-up to today’s summit. On that occasion, the Polish deputy minister, Waldemar Pawlak, mentioned the major infrastructure projects – on, for example, the road, motorway and rail networks – planned by his government. He also said that he hoped to see a further development of collaboration with Italy in the defence sector.
On the energy front, two nuclear power stations are planned while gas and renewables are to be exploited more fully.
