Intensifying the bilateral dialogue on the principal European questions, especially in the run-up to the Italian Presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2014. That was the focus of a visit to Rome by a delegation from the Swedish Foreign Ministry, which was received at the Farnesina on 7 October 2013 to meet senior officials from the Directorate General for the European Union. Participants at the meeting included the Director General, Luigi Mattiolo, and the Deputy Director, Alessandro Pignatti.

The Swedish delegation included 36 officials from the corresponding Directorate General at Sweden’s Foreign Ministry, led by the Director, Mikaela Kumlin Granit. The meeting was an opportunity to examine areas of common ground on various EU issues and to seek convergence with an important partner in northern Europe and the Baltic countries, in the light of forthcoming important institutional engagements.
