Bonino meets with Aung San Suu Kyi – Joint press conference with Burmese Nobel laureate

Minister for Foreign Affairs Emma Bonino is meeting today in Rome with Burmese MP and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. A press conference is planned at the end of their meeting. The Burmese opposition leader’s visit to Rome, where she has been awarded honorary citizenship, falls within the context of a broader European tour.

Minister Bonino was present at Rome’s City Hall where the ceremony took place and, as she welcomed Aung San Suu Kyi, she recalled their meeting in Myanmar in the 1990s as well as her recent meeting at the Foreign Ministry with her Burmese counterpart within the framework of the conference entitled “Myanmar, A New Asian Frontier”, organised by the foreign ministry and the Ministry of Economic Development in collaboration with the OECD and the Asian Observatory. The event was entirely focused on that Asian nation, which has recently undertaken a process of reform and democratic transition and that now offers a new, and to some extent unexplored, business frontier.
