Monday 21 October opens two weeks packed with high-level meetings that will underscore the dynamic relationship between Italy and Myanmar (Burma). The focus will be on investment opportunities for our companies in the Asian country. On Wednesday 23 October the Burmese Foreign Minister, Wunna Maung Lwin, will join Foreign Minister Emma Bonino to open the conference on “Myanmar, the new Asian frontier”. The audience will include important Italian industrial groups.
The Burmese foreign minister will be meeting and holding a joint press conference with Minister Bonino on the morning of 23 October. In recent years, Italy has believed and invested in the more open political and economic approach taken by Myanmar and the Farnesina is keen to establish closer relations. Italy is also supporting, with our European partners, the transition towards the elections in 2015.
In the margins of the Foreign Affairs Council of Monday 21 October 2013, Minister Bonino will be meeting Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi, who is in Luxembourg as part of her tour of European capitals. The meeting will provide an opportunity for an initial exchange of views on the outlook for the democratic transition in Myanmar, in the run-up to the meeting planned for Monday 28 October at the Farnesina. Minister Bonino and Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi will also discuss the inclusiveness of Myanmar’s institutions. Both women hope to see the institutions reflect all of the country’s ethnic groups in a framework of respect for satisfactory standards of respect for human rights, social values and gender equality.
