Egypt: Interest in Italian language on the rise

A full 100,000 Egyptian students are learning Italian and the call for it is growing. To meet this demand, the Italian government recently disbursed a contribution of €20,000 to fund Italian studies departments and hire 14 new instructors for a 3-year period to teach in the secondary schools of Alexandria and Cairo.

Promotion strategy

This contribution is part of the foreign ministry’s broader language and culture promotion strategy in the countries of Northern Africa, of which Egypt is one of the mainstays. Egyptian Minister for Education Mohamed Abou El Nasser recently expressed his gratitude and deep interest to Italian ambassador Maurizio Massari, and the hope that more Egyptian students would take up the Italian language, along with the Egyptian government’s full support for the success of the initiative.
