Italy – Launches competition at Karachi Literature Festival

The Italian consulate in Karachi, together with the publishing house “Metropoli d’Asia”, launched a literary competition in Pakistan at the prestigious Karachi Literature Festival, which drew tens of thousands of visitors to the city. Italy played a major role in the cultural festival, as the four scheduled panel discussions show. Discussions focused on Italian and Urdu language literature, Italian art history and also on the experience of a publishing house that releases contemporary Asian literature in Italian. Two guests, Andrea Berrini and Sabiana Paoli, also took part in seminars and meetings with students at the city’s two universities.

“Italy Reads Pakistan Award”

The “Italy Reads Pakistan Award” is addressed to young Pakistani writers. The winner will have his work in Urdu or English translated into Italian. As the Italian Consul General in Karachi, Gianluca Rubagotti, pointed out when presenting the competition, Italy wants to strengthen ties with Pakistan, “improving understanding between our two countries”. From this perspective, “activities such as these are among the best tools”, he said. This is why, “we decided to launch the competition”, in partnership with “Metropoli d’Asia”, a publishing company strongly committed to building bridges and bringing the cultures of these two worlds closer together. This is not the first time that a Pakistani author has been translated into Italian, added Mr Rubagotti, recalling that the guests will also include HM Naqvi and Bina Shah, who will talk about their personal experiences in this area.
