The Italian Embassy in Oslo and the Bekkelagshøgdas Lokalhistorisk Forening Association are commemorating the first flight across the Arctic, carried out by what is historically known as the Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile expedition. A ceremony on April 14 will celebrate that same date in 1926 when Rome’s Ciampino airport greeted the airship Norge, designed and piloted by Umberto Nobile. The airship then went on to fly from Oslo to the North Pole and then to Alaska with on board the three people who respectively conceived, financed and realised the enterprise. The Embassy and the Association – in particular its president Dag Jarnøy, a passionate scholar of the expedition – are commemorating the adventure at the site where the airship’s mooring mast once stood, and where there is a plaque with the names of Amundsen, Ellsworth and Nobile. The 90th anniversary of the historic expedition comes at a particularly good time for bilateral relations between Italy and Norway, confirming the great length and depth of their relations, also in the field of science, technology, transport and Arctic exploration.
