The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hosted an event promoted by the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development -ENEA and the Ministry of Economic Development for the presentation of the International Energy Agency’s report: ETP 2016 – TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE URBAN ENERGY SYSTEMS.
ETP 2016 is based on the consideration that the share of the world’s urban population is growing. Coordination and promotion of sustainable energy systems by national governments are a prerequisite for exploiting the potential for sustainable energy technologies and policies in cities where they are often scarcely utilised. Ambitious actions in urban areas are strategic for achieving the long-term sustainability of the global energy system, including emission reductions. The IEA’s study is extremely important for a country like Italy, where 43% of the population lives in metropolitan areas characterized by the coexistence of multiple functions (private residences, production and services) and flows (of goods and people).
