Tunis, the Italian Embassy opens “Garden of the Righteous”

The Italian Embassy in Tunis will open a very special “Garden of the Righteous” on 15 July. At the presence of the authorities of the two Countries, a tree will be planted in the memory of Faraaz Hussein, the young man who could have saved his life during the Dhaka terrorist attack but decided not to abandon his two girlfriends and was killed by the terrorists. In addition to Faraaz Hussein, the Garden will also commemorate the “Righteous” among the Arabs who saved the life of Jews during the Nazi-Fascist period. A total of five trees will be planted. Speeches will be delivered by Raimondo De Cardona, the Italian Ambassador in Tunis, and by Abdessatar Ben Moussa, winner of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. In addition to Faraaz Hussein, the Garden will commemorate Mohamed Bouazizi, the street vendor who triggered the Arab Spring movement in 2010; Khaled al-Asaad, Palmyra’s chief archaeologist who was killed by ISIS last summer; Khaled Abdul Wahab, the Tunisian who hid a Jewish family in his farm’s mill during the Nazi-Fascist occupation, and Hamadi ben Habdesslem, the Tunisian tour guide who, at the risk of his own life, saved dozens of Italians during the terrorist attack on the Bardo Museum, and who will attend the ceremony.
