Bratislava dedicates the month of November to photography with dozens of events, conferences, concerts and workshops that liven up the city with one of the region’s most important cultural events of the season. On 4 November GMB, the Bratislava City Gallery, will open the exhibition “Modern Italian Photography (1930 – 1970)”. The images displayed trace the history of photography in Italy through its most important representatives of the period: Giuseppe Cavalli, Mario Giacomelli, Mimmo Jodice and Ugo Mulas. The exhibition, organised in conjunction with the Italian Cultural Institute in Bratislava, will run until 15 November. The curator of the exhibition is collector Massimo Prelz Oltramonti and Emma Lewis is co-curator. A special section of this year’s edition of the Month of Photography will be dedicated to the release of the publication “The History of European Photography of the 20th Century: 1970 – 2000” (the two preceding volumes focused on the periods 1900 – 1938 and 1939 – 1969). The book, a cooperative effort by several photography experts from 36 different European countries, is published in English and has become the most significant editorial and research endeavour of the Festival organisers. The third and last volume of the series traces the development of photography in the period of reference, not only in the Western European photography super-powers but also in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, spanning from Albania to Ukraine, thus becoming an exclusive publication of reference at global level.
