United Kingdom – The Italian Cultural Institute in London is hosting “Destruction/Reconstruction”

A photo exhibition by Daniele Molajoli and Flavio Scollo that depicts the devastation caused by the terrible earthquake which struck central Italy on August 24. The quake killed many inhabitants, disfiguring one of the wealthiest historic and artistic sites in the country. The medieval villages, the frescoed churches and the historic buildings have all been almost completely reduced to rubble. The theme of the two photographers is the protection of the cultural heritage and identity of the area. They have fragmented the facades of many of the churches, only to reassemble them, with the aim of underlining their fragility and the urgency to reconstruct them. The two subsequent earthquakes of 26 and 30 October, which affected the area that had already been stricken by shocks, exacerbated the situation, especially in the Valnerina area and in the towns of Norcia and Preci. Churches, monasteries, and basilicas, which had been declared inaccessible, were razed to the ground completely. Hence, the photographic view recomposes and has the function of reconstructing an image that may have been lost forever. After the presentation at Rome’s Macro museum, this exhibit has landed in London, hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute and directed by Marco Delogu, who is also the curator.of this show. The launch event was also attended by the two photographers, Molajoli and Scollo. The initiative was organised within the framework of a fundraising project for the reconstruction of the art masterpieces in the affected area, carried out together with Poste Italiane and il Circolo, the Italian Cultural Association London. The initiative is meant to raise awareness internationally on the tragedy and allocate the funds to cultural projects, considered to be a priority.
