The Yugoslav Cinematheque in Belgrade (Kosovska 11) will open a cycle of screenings dedicated to Giuseppe de Santis on Friday, 3 February. The three-day event, organised in cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade, aims to pay homage to the Italian film director on the 100th anniversary of his birth (11 February 1917). From Friday through Sunday, some of the most famous films by the director, one of the fathers of Italian neorealism, will be shown to the public. The screening will include nine films, beginning with the documentary “Days of Glory” (“Giorni di gloria”) of 1945, which will be followed by “Tragic Hunt” (“Caccia tragica”, 1947), featuring Vivi Gioi and Andrea Checchi and “Bitter Rice” (“Riso amaro”), the 1949 iconic film on the women working in the rice fields that marked the cinematographic debut of Silvana Mangano, co-starring with Vittorio Gassman, Doris Dowling and Raf Vallone.
Saturday’s programme will include: “No Peace Under the Olive Tree” (“Non c’è pace tra gli ulivi”) a film of 1950 featuring the debut of Lucia Bosé playing a woman involved in a vendetta between two shepherds. The following screening will be of “Rome 11:00” (“Roma, ore 11”, 1952), a film narrating a tragic accident involving a group of girls looking for a job. Silvana Pampanini is the star of “A Husband for Anna” (“Un marito per Anna Zaccheo”, 1953) which will be screened at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Lastly, Sunday’s programme includes: “Un apprezzato professionista di sicuro avvenire” (1972), “The Wolves” (“Uomini e lupi”, 1957) and “The Road a Year Long” (“La strada lunga un anno”, 1958).
