Sparkle upgrades the US-Chile submarine cable with Ciena
Sparkle Italy’s number one international wholesale service provider and the eighth largest in the world, and Ciena (NYSE: CIEN), a network systems, services and software company, announce the expansion of Sparkle’s 10,476 km of fibre on the Curie submarine cable with Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e), the industry’s first 800G programmable solution, improving capacity and speed on the route from Chile to the United States.
With the WL5e solution, based on consistent optical technology that allows more information to be carried over the cable, Sparkle Fibre on the Curie can reach a transmission capacity of up to 450 Gbps per channel, twice as fast as the previous technology, with capacity of up to 19Tbps and a 30 percent increase in bandwidth, giving customers the ability to benefit from more HD video and cloud computing applications.
With Ciena’s WL5e-based GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution, Sparkle will also have direct connectivity between data centres in the U.S. and Chile, and through the Manage, Control and Plan (MCP), domain controller, Sparkle will be equipped with real-time intelligence and analysis tools to proactively identify connectivity issues.
