“The tragic result of the hunger strike by Cuban dissident Wilmar Villar Mendoza is cause for deep sadness and we extends our condolences”.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi added that he wanted “to understand the entire affair more deeply, particularly the reasons for its tragic conclusion”.
“In light of this dramatic episode – Terzi underscored – Italy plans to intensify its efforts, especially within the framework of the European Union, to convince the international community to urge the Cuban authorities to continue the liberation of political prisoners that began a few months ago, and to make further advancements in the name of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms”.
