“The naming of such an experienced and accomplished person as Lakhdar Brahimi to succeed Kofi Annan as UN and Arab League Special Envoy in Syria is a highly significant development for the complete resumption of diplomatic efforts to reach a political solution to the crisis”.
This was the statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi, who added that “a solution can no longer be postponed, and must necessarily consist of a political transition to a government of national unity without Assad, which is the only way out capable of ensuring the Syrian people a future of peace and stability”.
“Italy”, the foreign minister underscored, “assures Brahimi its strong and immediate support, in the hopes that the entire international community follows suit with the same sense of responsibility. It is certainly to be hoped”, Terzi concluded, “that the United Nations will have a greater role than it has had thus far as a result of the stalemate in the Security Council”.
