Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi continues to closely monitor developments in Mogadishu, where members of the international community are meeting today – Italy represented by Ambassador Mazzella – ahead of the completion of tomorrow’s expected transition. Minister Terzi expressed his full support for the final declarations of UN Special Envoy Ambassador Augustine Mahiga, and voiced strong encouragement to Somali leaders in the pursuit and completion of their courageous undertaking to approve the constitution and select the majority of the members of a new parliament.
Italy, which over the 8 years of transition has firmly supported stabilisation in Somalia, strongly hopes that over the coming days it will finally be possible to witness the establishment of new and more representative institutions capable of effectively meeting the compelling needs of the Somali people, guaranteeing human rights and fundamental liberties and strengthening the country’s security framework. In early July the foreign ministry in Rome hosted a meeting of the International Contact Group, where Italy joined its international partners in reiterating the commitment to support Somalia on its path toward a future of peace, stability and prosperity.
