A new agreement on the status of Italian schools, and their staff, in Eritrea was signed today in Asmara. “This is an important result in revitalising the historic Italian presence in the country”, declared Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi. The Minister was commenting on the positive outcome of negotiations which he had personally pursued.
The agreement signed today, 21 September 2012, by the Italian Ambassador in Asmara, Marcello Fondi, and the Eritrean Education Minister, Semere Russom, sets out the terms for the operation of the schools and the conditions of the Italian teaching staff. It will enable enrolments, which had been temporarily suspended, to resume immediately.
