This morning Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi contacted the head of the Syrian opposition coalition formed yesterday in Doha.
The minister personally congratulated President of the new Alliance Moaz Al Khateeb and Vice President Riad Seif, who had played a decisive role in the strategy for unifying the Syrian opposition.
Terzi extended both men Italy’s “deepest congratulations” for the “important achievement at Doha”, reiterating Italy’s intention to continue to offer political and economic support to the forces opposing the Syrian regime.
In light of the significant step made in Doha toward a political solution to the Syrian crisis – fruit of the capacity for leadership and hospitality of the Qatar authorities and, in particular, Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Al Thani – Italy now intends to encourage the international community’s greater commitment at the level of humanitarian aid and economic assistance to the Syrian opposition.
