Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi received a group of 26 Syrian activists today at the foreign ministry in Rome, who represented all the components of the Syrian society and ethnic and religious groups, in Rome to attend an advanced training course in international relations, diplomacy and global governance.
The course, prepared by specialised Italian institutions with the contribution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is one of the initiatives the Italian government is advancing in an effort to strengthen the democratic Syrian opposition with a view to the country’s future transition. It is one of a growing number of Italian efforts to lend support to the Syrian opposition’s democratic front, which, through the 11 November Doha accords, unified their positions and formed a national coalition that incorporates the Syrian National Council and other opposition groups.
“The future that we are working toward together”, Terzi asserted during the meeting, “is one of a democratic Syria, free from tyranny and respectful of the freedoms and rights of all its citizens, without racial, gender, religious or political discrimination. A Syria that proudly regains its place in the international family and that becomes an actor for peace and stability throughout the Middle East and the world”.
