Yemen: Conference on National Dialogue in Sana’a; Bonino, major milestone in democratic transition

“Today’s ceremony marks a major milestone in the process of democratic transition in Yemen”, commented Minister for Foreign Affairs Emma Bonino when informed of the conclusion of the Conference on National Dialogue held in Sana’a, adding that she had “deeply appreciated the determination and efforts of the conference delegates to overcome the many obstacles and difficulties that have arisen over recent months”.

Underscoring that effective and responsible institutions were the only possible response to the country’s humanitarian, economic and security emergencies, the minister asserted that “the Yemeni people deserve a transparent and fully inclusive political system” and, to that end, expressed her hope that all the Yemeni political actors would pursue efforts in favour of democracy, national reconciliation and respect for human rights.

“For its part”, Bonino concluded, “Italy confirms its commitment to support the transition, both through our maritime security aid programmes and the Friends of Yemen group.
