Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini was hopeful that a new Supreme Court ruling would make a new political climate possible in Libya.
“I admire both sides’ resolve to accept the ruling, and am certain that this will contribute to improving the country’s political and social climate”, the minister stated.
“It is now important to concentrate on the parliamentary elections of 25 June, the task of which will be to jump-start the transition after months of political impasse and unproductive confrontation”, she continued.
“The Conference on National Dialogue that, with the convinced support of the special envoys sent by Italy and other friendly nations, UNSMIL is to convene immediately prior to the elections, will be an important step toward national reconciliation”.
National reconciliation and the drafting of a constitution are the instruments by which the Libyan people will be able to overcome the daunting problems they are faced with build national unity. With their immense natural and human resources, they will be able to shape a future of prosperity and stability that will allow for the rational management of migrant flows and asylum seekers”, she concluded, “and Libya will always have Italy by its side in these undertakings”.
