Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni held a telephone meeting today with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, to whom he assured Italy’s solidarity following the appalling attack on a Jerusalem synagogue, and newly extended condolences to the families of the victims and the Israeli government.
Minister Gentiloni also expressed appreciation for U.S. Secretary of State Kerry’s continuing commitment to reopen peace talks.
The Minister underscored the importance of maintaining the status quo at Jerusalem’s holy sites, not least in an effort to avert the risk of the conflict assuming a religious nature.
