Gentiloni urges stop to violence and military action in southern Lebanon. Phone calls with Commander Portolano and Minister Margallo

Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni spoke by telephone with UNIFIL Commander General Luciano Portolano.

Minister Gentiloni received updated information on the clashes that had continued since late morning in the eastern section of the UNIFIL mission’s operating area, and during which one Spanish Blue Helmet lost his life.

“In expressing its deep concern over the serious tensions developing along the line of demarcation between Lebanon and Israel, Italy also urges an end to violence and military actions in southern Lebanon, and a return to normalcy in accordance with the rules set out in United Nations Resolution 1701”, Gentiloni said.

The minister also extended the government’s condolences in a telephone exchange with his Spanish colleague Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo.
