The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, received the Maltese Foreign Minister, George Vella, today 17 February 2015. The two ministers discussed the Libyan crisis and the immigration emergency.
“This is a particularly sensitive time for the equilibria of the Mediterranean, which are a priority for our two countries”, declared Minister Gentiloni. “Italy and Malta hold convergent views on the Libyan crisis and the management of migration flows, and both countries see the stabilisation of Libya as a priority”.
“The need for greater solidarity among EU countries to tackle the consequences of the large numbers of migrants reaching the Union’s southern shores is becoming increasingly clear”, added Gentiloni. “I hope Malta will support Italy in its efforts to initiate more effective measures by the EU to tackle flows of irregular migrants in the Mediterranean”, concluded the foreign minister.
