Greater engagement in Libya with UN. I will report to Parliament Thursday, says Gentiloni

“The temporary closing of our embassy in Tripoli has taken place in a rapid and orderly fashion, and for this I would like to thank all those responsible at the Farnesina and the other ministries that collaborated on the operation. The closing was made necessary as a result of the deteriorating situation in Libya”, said Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni.

“Italy continues to work with the international community in an effort to fight terrorism and rebuild a unified and inclusive state in Libya based on the negotiations launched by UN Special Envoy Leon, in which our ambassador Buccino will continue to participate”.

“The worsening situation”, the minister concluded, “now calls for extraordinary engagement and a greater assumption of responsibility along the lines that the parliament will begin to discuss on Thursday 19 February. Italy endorses this extraordinary political commitment and is ready to do its part in Libya within the framework of the decisions of the United Nations”.
