Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, received at the Farnesina the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Martin Kobler.
At the centre of the talks was the current situation in Libya and Italy’s contribution to stabilise the Country. Minister Alfano confirmed to Mr Kobler the Italian government’s full support to Libya’s legitimate Institutions and affirmed that “the reopening of our Embassy in Tripoli is a strong sign of closeness with the Libyan people and of our support to the Presidential Council and the Political Agreement, and will enable us to expedite the resumption of several bilateral initiatives and facilitate the dialogue between the international community and the legitimate Authorities”.
Minister Alfano added: “We truly hope that this reopening will also encourage other members of the international community to return to Tripoli. Also the presence of the UNSMIL would be very important.” He went on: “We cannot allow Libya to fall back into chaos and Italy remains convinced that there is no military solution that can solve the Country’s problems. Only the Skhirat Agreement, which the Italian Government will continue to support, offers a political framework for a tangible resolution of the issues at play and for urgently expediting a national reconciliation process.”
