Swiss Ambassador summoned urgently to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Swiss Ambassador, Giancarlo Kessler, has been summoned urgently to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the night-time closure of three border crossings and the statements that accompanied the Swiss decision.

Mr Kessler stressed that it was a temporary and experimental measure. It will soon be reviewed as part of a further improvement of cooperation between security forces, in light of the existing agreement between the police forces in the two countries.

The Italian side took the opportunity to repeat its demand for the criminal record checks that are applied only to Italian cross-border workers to cease as soon as possible.

As the Swiss side acknowledged, these are a violation of the agreement on free movement.

The Ambassador gave an assurance that the Swiss side is working to end these procedures, introducing Euro-compatible measures if necessary.
