Alfano talks to his counterparts from Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia: “Let’s get to work on de-escalating the tension in the Gulf”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Angelino Alfano, had a dense working agenda yesterday afternoon, having held telephone conversations with the Foreign Minister of Qatar, Sheik Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Kuwait, Sheik Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and with the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, Adel Al-Jubeir.

The conversations focused on the current crisis in the Gulf region, in respect of which Minister Alfano expressed concern for the humanitarian impact, affirming that “Italy firmly supports the mediation efforts made by the Emir of Kuwait, Sheik Sabah Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, to re-establish unity and harmony in the region, also through the action of the Gulf Cooperation Council, of which Kuwait currently holds the rotating presidency.”

Mr Alfano also highlighted the close friendship and cooperation relations that Italy has with all the Gulf Countries, in the light of which the Italian Government has actively committed to make a staunch contribution towards re-establishing a climate of confidence between the players involved. Minister Alfano expressed this wish: “Italy recommends all the parties involved to make an effort to promptly solve the tension and to abstain from taking any action that might further undermine the situation.”
