Telephone conversation of Minister Alfano with his Spanish counterpart on the Ciotti case

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, today had a telephone conversation with the Spanish Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis, to talk about the tragedy that befell Niccolo’ Ciatti.

“Italy is deeply saddened and astonished at what happened at Lloret de Mar, where young Niccolo’ Ciatti was brutally murdered by three Chechen young men last week,” said Minister Alfano to his Spanish colleague.

Alfano, who has been informed of the results of the autopsy carried out on the body of the victim, asked his Spanish counterpart to speed up procedures in order to bring the body of Niccolo’ back to Scandicci, where his family, relatives and town people wish to pay him last respects.

While expressing his full respect for the independence of the Spanish judiciary, Alfano asked Dastis to do everything possible to bring all the perpetrators of the murder to justice and to be sentenced.

“Three men attacked Niccolo’ for no reason whatsoever and viciously beat him when he had already been knocked on the ground. This is why the news about the release of two of the three Chechen nationals, who were initially detained,” added Alfano, “has caused perplexity and concern in Italian public opinion.”

Minister Dastis pledged he would immediately follow up on Minister Alfano’s requests.

Alfano has also asked the Italian Embassy in Madrid, the Italian Consulate General in Barcelona and the Farnesina to continue to give maximum support, as has been the case since the attack took place, to the family of the victim as well as to follow the development of the case by working in close contact with Spanish authorities.
